The Dow notched its ninth gain in a row, for the longest winning streak in 16-plus years. The Dow has risen every day this month and is up 10.3% this year. Its last nine-day winning streak was in May 1996. In November of the same year, in the early days of the tech boom, it gained for 10 straight days. Stocks overcame an early loss Wednesday, having edged lower at the start of the day despite a strong increase in consumer spending last month. The market’s failure to rally directly after the report suggests the bar has risen for investors. ‘As the market rises, so do expectations,’ said Bill Stone, at PNC Wealth Management.
