Firms testing same-day delivery

Several companies are testing same-day delivery of products ordered online or with mobile apps, in Boston and elsewhere.


“Local Express” delivery is available to Boston-area customers on a subset of the items Amazon sells.

The cost is $8.99 per shipment, plus 99 cents for each item in the shipment.


Test phase started last month in the San Francisco Bay area, offering goods from stores like Staples, Walgreen, and Target.


Google is still determining pricing.


Mobile app offers same-day delivery of merchandise from stores such as Macy’s, RadioShack, and Home Depot, using a network of “shopping valets.”

Only for purchases over $25. Deliveries cost $5 each. Available in New York and the San Francisco Bay area.


Launched in 2010, the Cambridge bookshop offers same-day delivery via bicycle.

Service starts at $5, with $1 tacked on for each additional item.


Postmates’ iPhone app connects customers with couriers willing to pick up and deliver restaurant meals or a replacement coffee carafe. Currently active in San Francisco and Seattle.

Delivery fees start at $6.99.
