City officials are closing the Winthrop Square garage in downtown Boston indefinitely, citing structural problems. The 550-space city-owned garage will close Friday night because of deterioration and excessive moisture found during recent repairs. Boston officials said the garage will remain closed pending a more detailed structural analysis. No cars will be allowed in the garage after 3 p.m. on Friday.
In 2006, entrepreneur Steve Belkin devised plans for 85-story skyscraper on the garage site, but the project stalled during the recession.
