Cubist recalls Cubicin antibiotic

Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc., the Lexington biotech company, said Thursday it is recalling four lots of its Cubicin antibiotic after glass particles were found in some vials.

Cubist said no adverse events have been reported as a result due to the “presence of particulate matter” in the vials. But if the particles were to contaminate the drug, it cold pose a safety risk to patients, the company said.

Spokeswoman Julie DiCarlo said the four lots represented about two weeks of production at one of the company’s two Cubicin manufacturers but is not expected to disrupt overall supplies to patients. Cubist is notifying patients by letter and phone and will replace recalled products. The company has also alerted notified the Food and Drug Administration about the recall.
