United Technologies may have to furlough 5,000

United Technologies, which supplies helicopters and jet engines to the US military, said a lengthy government shutdown may force furloughs of up to 5,000 workers. The first effect will be about 2,000 layoffs at Sikorsky Aircraft Monday, possibly followed by 2,000 more at Pratt & Whitney and UTC Aerospace Systems. If the shutdown runs into next month, the total may pass 5,000. About 18 percent of Hartford-based United Technologies revenue is from the government.
