The Boston Redevelopment Authority has approved construction of a 156-room hotel along West Broadway in South Boston, adding to a flurry of development projects in the once gritty area.
A lawyer with Sun Condos LLC, an affiliate of Boston-based Pappas Enterprises Inc., said the firm hopes to start construction next April. The new hotel, to be located at West Broadway and Dorchester Avenue, will have a rooftop pool and lounge as well as a ground-floor restaurant and a 50-space parking garage underground.
Pappas Enterprises previously developed condos and stores at the nearby Macallen and Court Square Press buildings, leading a broader revitalization of the area that has resulted in hundreds of new homes and restaurants.
Executives with the firm have said the $35 million hotel will offer rooms for just over $200 a night, significantly less than high-end hotels in the Back Bay and Cambridge. The hotel will be operated by Thompson Hotels, which has boutique-style properties in New York, London, Miami, and other cities.
The project still needs approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals.
On Wednesday, the BRA also released plans for construction of a 94-room addition to the Hotel Commonwealth in Kenmore Square. The addition would be built on a parking lot behind the hotel.
