The heat shield (top) that will protect NASA’s Orion spacecraft during its first test mission next year departed on Wednesday from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport for the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shield was constructed by Textron Defense Systems in Wilmington and was transported to Florida on NASA’s Super Guppy aircraft (bottom). Orion is designed to take astronauts farther into space than ever before, including to an asteroid and Mars.
