For those who hate to be weighted down while shopping, relief may be on the way. Several local retail meccas, including Burlington Mall, the Mall at Chestnut Hill, Northshore Mall, and South Shore Plaza, are unveiling a new amenity -- a complimentary cloak room of sorts where shoppers can check their coats, bags, and packages.

Think of the potential convenience. And the possibility that shopping could evolve into a guerilla-like activity. Instead of being bogged down like a slow-moving army with baggage and impedimenta, retail practitioners now may be free to make quick lightning strike-like purchases while in the midst of a lengthy shopping spree.

The announcement of this new free offering was made by Simon Property Group, which operates about 325 shopping centers in North America, including a dozen in Massachusetts.

“We think the new complimentary coat and package check combined with our other unique amenities will enhance the shopping experience for our guests at Simon Malls, and further set us apart as the premier shopping destinations in the area,” Brian Nelson, Simon’s New England regional vice president, said in a statement.

Other amenities offered by Simon malls include free Wi-Fi, electronic charging stations, and soft seating areas.
