Nowhere is it written that the empty-nest stage must be spent in some sunny place where the cockroaches are large enough for saddles and the change in seasons is marked only by the application of another layer of sunscreen. English Commons in Topsfield looks like a worthy alternative.

An over-55 community of condos built on a large peninsula off Route 1, it’s only a few minutes from Interstate 95 and a little bit farther from this North Shore town’s most famous element, the Topsfield Fair.

The 50 units are built in widely separated clusters of two and three townhomes, all of which overlook an expansive common green space anchored at one end by a gazebo and at the other by a clubhouse with a pool. In between is a putting green and walking trail.

This means that the eating area in the kitchen, large enough for four and positioned underneath a coffered ceiling, is the perfect spot to watch and chortle, hot chocolate or iced tea in hand, as someone else shovels the driveway during winter and mows the grass in the summer. A rectangular deck in the rear of the house is an ideal summertime perch.

The kitchen is cook-friendly with stainless steel appliances and granite counters. The remainder of the first floor is dominated by a family room with a soaring ceiling, working fireplace, and a large transom window above a slider to the deck. A separate office with cabinets and slider to the deck is adjacent. A comfy living room niche looks over the deck.

The second floor is composed of two bedroom suites of roughly equal size. Each features a sleeping area, walk-in closets, and full bath with separate whirlpool tubs, separate showers, and double vanities.

The basement is fully finished with a large alcove space next to a full bath, a living room area, and a large sliding glass door leading to the manicured rear yard. There is a one-car garage underneath.
