Urban farming takes root

Small-scale growing has the potential to create jobs, clean up blighted landscapes, and improve neighborhood residents’ access to fresh, nutritious foods

Boston is frequently ranked as one of the healthiest cities in the country. We wanted to see where residents could go to work out, rent a bike, and buy locally-grown food in relation to diversity of the neighborhoods. Gyms listed on Yelp are more likely to be found in the northern neighborhoods of Boston. Hubway bike stands are concentrated in the downtown area. However, there are plenty of urban orchards and farms and community gardens in central Boston, including in Roxbury, Roslindale, and Mattapan.
