Dow tops 17,000 after strong jobs report

The Dow topped 17,000 for the first time Thursday in this holiday-shortened week, following news that US hiring accelerated last month. The Department of Labor reported that the nation’s employers added 288,000 workers to their payrolls in June, far more than forecast. Trading was extremely light. The jobs report is the latest data to show the economy continues to steadily improve. On Wednesday, payroll processor ADP said private businesses added 281,000 jobs in June, up from 179,000 in May. Investors sold bonds after the strong jobs report. US markets will be closed Friday for the Fourth of July holiday. Trading will reopen Monday.
