Rebound taking hold in Central, Western Mass.

Boston’s tech- and science-fueled economy may be booming, but don’t overlook Central and Western Massachusetts, according to a new research note from Citizens Bank.

Manufacturing is the biggest sector of the economy in the western half of the state, and its output grew 15 percent from 2009 to 2012 as it rebounded from a brutal recession.

Health care and life sciences is the second largest sector west of Boston, and its growth is fueled by research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester and its flagship campus in Amherst.

The percentages in the chart above reflect the share of the region’s economic output.
