Boston ranks third in study of nonprofit performance

Boston ranks third in a new report evaluating the performance of the largest nonprofits in the country’s top 30 metro regions. Now in its 11th year, the annual study by Charity Navigator rates nonprofits on their financial health, accountability, and transparency. It compares factors such as fundraising and administrative expenses, executive compensation, and whether nonprofits post certain financial documents online. Among the 254 largest charities in Boston, average CEO compensation is about $166,000, compared to $126,000 nationally, according to the study. Houston and San Diego rank first and second in the report, respectively.
