Boston Dynamics’ new robot can jump higher than you can

Waltham robot maker Boston Dynamics is on a roll, with a fast-moving robot that gets around using both legs and wheels.

Boston Dynamics made its name by building two- and four-legged robots for use by military forces and emergency workers. But its latest robot, called “Handle,” uses motorized wheels that can carry the machine into — or out of — a dangerous situation far faster than a robot can walk.

Video of the new machine leaked from an investors’ meeting earlier this month, but on Monday, BD made it official by publishing the video to YouTube.

Handle can roll along at up to nine miles per hour, jump four feet in the air and travel 15 miles on a single battery charge.

There’s no telling when Handle will see action. Owner Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is reportedly looking to sell Boston Dynamics and get out of the robot business.
