Images of the “Fearless Girl” statue have gone viral.

The Fearless Girl statue will stay. A bronze statue of a young girl looking defiantly at the famous Wall Street bull in Manhattan has been approved to remain there through February, at the behest of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The statue was installed earlier this month by the investment unit of Boston-based State Street Corp., and the image went viral.

The sculpture, by artist Kristen Visbal, captured the fascination of legions of women on Twitter and visitors to Manhattan. It was placed within the gaze of the Charging Bull on the eve of International Women’s Day, in what turned out to be a publicity coup for State Street.

The bull’s sculptor, Arturo Di Modica, was apparently not impressed, calling the girl an “advertising trick” in an interview with MarketWatch.

A group of women are petitioning to make the statue permanent.

Correction: An earlier version of this story included a misspelling of de Blasio.
