Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts said Friday that personal information — including Social Security numbers — of about 1,843 members was exposed during a recent breach.
The exposure was not the result of a cyberattack, but happened when a Blue Cross employee mistakenly e-mailed information to one employer that contained personal information for workers of a different employer, Blue Cross said.
The personal information also included names, birth dates, addresses, and phone numbers.
Officials at Blue Cross, the state’s largest health insurer, apologized for the error. They said the individuals affected by the breach have been notified and will be offered free credit monitoring and identity theft protection.Priyanka Dayal McCluskey can be reached at email@example.com.
