Indexes fell sharply as investors held out little hope of a quick compromise on the so-called fiscal cliff. Even signs from the Federal Reserve that it would expand its bond-buying program failed to ease the Wall Street’s mood. A Commerce Department report that Americans cut their spending in October also weighed on the markets.
