The Boston Globe Foundation has adopted a focused approach to its community investments. By concentrating on four focus areas and by making significant investments in a select few organizations, the Foundation is better positioned to effect change in our community. To enable us to stay responsive to pressing needs in the community we work in, the Neighbor To Neighbor Initiative funds exceptional Dorchester focused nonprofits.

New Deadline:
Beginning in 2006, the Boston Globe Foundation and Neighbor To Neighbor will make all grant decisions in the first quarter of each year for funding that year.

If your organization wishes to apply for a grant for any time in 2008, please submit your request no later than October 1, 2007.

Flagship Partnerships:
We assessed organizations that we felt best fit with our focus areas and strategies and selected Flagship Partners. This has been and continues to be a proactive process on our part. We hope that this reduces the amount of time and resources expended on the part of nonprofits.

Application Process:

If you think that your organization fits our focus areas and strategies, we encourage you to send us a two-page concept paper by October 1 to foundation@globe.com

Please include:

1. Contact Information
2. Organization’s mission
3. How your organization fits into our focus areas and strategies.
4. What a partnership with the Globe Foundation would enable you to accomplish.

Please clearly label your email with “Concept Paper” and your organization’s name in the Subject line.

Neighbor To Neighbor Initiative:
In 2003 we created the Neighbor To Neighbor Initiative. A committee of Boston Globe employees evaluates grant requests and makes recommendations to the Foundation’s staff and Advisory Board. Nonprofits are selected that are doing exceptional work addressing community needs in Dorchester.

Application Process:

If your organization’s specific focus is Dorchester, we encourage you to send an application specifically to the Neighbor To Neighbor Fund by October 1, 2007 for 2008 funding.

You may either submit the Associated Grant Makers Common Proposal, or you may submit a proposal that answers the following questions (5 pages or less):

1. Contact information
2. Organization’s mission
3. Description of the organization’s Dorchester-focused programs and services
4. Amount requested (Grants range from $2,000 to $15,000. Average grant is $7,500.)
5. Description of program you are requesting funding for, including a project budget
6. Estimation of the program’s/organization’s impact in the community
7. Opportunities to utilize Boston Globe volunteers

Appendices:
a. Financials (current budget, most recent financial statement, most recent audit, 501(c)3 letter)
b. A list of your other funders
c. A list of your board of directors with affiliations

Timing:
The Foundation staff reviews all partnership opportunities, evaluates agencies and assesses the budgetary requirements. Staff recommendations are presented to the Foundation’s Advisory Board for funding decisions. Decisions are made annually, with all concept papers due by October 1 for funding the following year.
