Boston Globe Scholars Program: Each year, the Boston Globe Foundation makes it possible for several graduates of Boston’s public high schools to attend the University of Massachusetts Boston. The students are part of a Learning Community of Globe Scholars that provides direct support and guidance to the students, many of whom are the first generation in their families to attend college. Through the program, the students receive support and guidance from the Globe Scholars Coordinator, and they have access to special programs, events and activities as a group, including field trips, programs at the Globe and an annual Globe Scholars Reception held at the Globe recognizing the graduates of the program.
Massachusetts High School Drama Festival: The Boston Globe is the lead supporter of the Drama Festival, an event that has brought together public, private and parochial schools from around the Commonwealth for over 70 years. The Drama Festival, which draws an average of 100 participating member schools annually, gives high school drama students the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of an audience of their peers. Since 1992 and the establishment of The Acting and Set Design Scholarship Program, the Globe has awarded over $30,000 to over 50 winners.
Emerging Leaders Program, University of Massachusetts Boston: The Boston Globe Foundation was one of the initial supporters of this initiative, designed to identify and train the next generation of Boston’s leaders. Now in its fifth year, the Emerging Leaders Program provides an opportunity for young professionals from the nonprofit, corporate and government sectors to meet each other, work together, and learn about Boston’s issues directly from its leaders. The Globe grant has supported efforts to recruit and support minority participants for the program.
Moakley Public Speaking Institute, JFK Presidential Library & Museum: For nine days in August, 20 first-generation college-bound students from low-income families in the greater Boston area gathered at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum for the Joseph P. Moakley Public Speaking Summer Institute. The Moakley Institute serves to assist students with their public speaking skills.
