MATTHEW GILBERT’S article “The end is here,” (g section, Dec. 21) well documents the explosion of end-of-the-world themes in TV and cinema. The reason we’re drawn to these stories is that we are trying to come to terms with the actual situation on our planet. We’re pushing the global economy and environment to their limits. What we really need is to acknowledge this. The more we do that, the more chance we’ll have to soften the blows when they come.
