Is Markey out of touch? Not based on residency

HOME IS where the heart is, unless you serve in Congress. House members are obliged to have two residences, one in Washington, where they are expected to work a full-time job, and one in their home districts. Members balance these housing demands in different ways. Some have spouses and children in the home district, and commute to apartments or — in some cases — frat-like group homes in D.C., to save on rent. Others have their families join them in the Washington area and commute back to the district.

Ed Markey, who was first elected to Congress in 1976, eventually settled with his wife, Susan Blumenthal, into the Washington suburb of Chevy Chase. But he commuted back to his childhood home in Malden, where his aging parents lived. In 2001, after his father died, he bought the home himself. According to Markey’s office, he made 34 round trips between Washington and Malden in the last year alone.

I'm Ed Markey and I approved this message.

1976...............he's a career politican and a hack.

Couldn't agree more.  But I do wish that we could get more coverage on the issues, the voting record of both Markey and Lynch.  I don't give a damn about Markey's house in DC, or Lynch's $300K condo in DC (that was in the same building as Scott Brown's DC condo).  I want to know how they will vote on the issues that are important to me, like energy independence, energy conservation, and rebuilding our bridges that are falling apart.

Cordgrass is absolutely correct.  Why is it so difficult to get press coverage on a candidate’s record rather than on relatively meaningless talking points spread by political opponents?

Ed Markey is a stand up guy in the mold of a Tip O'Neil. He has always maintained his connection to the voters of his district. ask anyone who has ever had an issue they needed resolved. Ed gets involved. He will make a great Senator.  This comment was not paid for by Ed Markey.

Ed's been feeding at the public trough for 37 years. He should be contemplating retirement, not moving to the Senate. But this is Massachusetts, where all you have to do to get elected is bend over for the unions. Term limits would solve so many problems.

Another fluff piece.  I'll say it again, we get it Globe - you are endorsing Markey.  Do we really have to put up with months of this Markey worship?

Markey would make a horrible Senator.  Between him and Warren - we're doomed!

I'm already getting calls from friends our of state demanding an apology for MA dumping these characters onto the rest of the country.

I would prefer a congressman or senator who lives with his family in this state. How do you represent Massachusetts and live in, and bring up your children in, DC?

"I want to go to the United States Senate in order to fight for a constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United. The whole idea that the Koch brothers, that Karl Rove can say we're coming to Massachusetts, to any state of the union with undisclosed amounts of money is a pollution, which must be changed,"
