what a great idea. the project seems to need indoor and outdoor venues with general proximity. Lowell would be a good candidate. Large enough conventional space with neighborhood activities near by. What a better way celebrate the creative and industrial gifts we have in all of New England.
The success of Austin as a tech hub has more to do with state tax and regulatory policy plus the presence of the flagship UT campus. Boston has the edge in campuses but not in state policy. Beacon Hill is adrag on the Boston economy.
Come on, this entire series is so frustrating for one reason: Everything being said is so obvious that only an imbecile would disagree, and our mayor's office and community boards are occupied almost exclusively by imbeciles.
I think the author said it when he brought up Boston first came to prominence three centuries ago. It is basically still stuck there. Lots of attitude. Austin is one of the friendliest/craziest places on the planet..or at least was when it first started. I would bet Portland Me. has a better chance of pulling it off.
SXSW has been around for 25 years. It didn't just come out of nowhere. A city festival of its size simply cannot be matched by any city ever, to be honest. That said, Together Boston has been around for four years hammering away with a massive staff and massive events. Last year it sold out the House of Blues, Paradise and multiple venues throughout Boston, in addition to film screenings, panels, tech events, hackathons and multiple art installations. It was even given a declaration from the Mayor of Boston himself. That your editorial staff has admitted to not being "aware" of this festival and also admitted not having "realized" it exists is a bad sign for journalism at the Globe. http://togetherboston.com
Honest to god, if you birds love Texas so much, why don't you just load up your VW mini bus and get the hell out of a city that likes to get a few hours of sleep each night. Makes ya sick!
All the issues raised in this series need to be central to every candidate who wants my vote. Beacon Hill needs to wake up!
Boston politicians make believe it is a "world-class city" but it cannot be when it only functions for 2/3 of the hours in every day and for half the population (if that.)
We missed the boat on a SXSW type event and trying to create another "me too" event now is simply too late in the game. How many tech conferences do you really think there is an appetite for? Las vegas aslo hosts a huge new technology productshow every year that is well attended.
Boston has always been about nurturing emerging industries, but we aways fail in keeping them here. Better to nurture and give incentives to new technologies to stay in the area than try to lure technology back here. I'm sure MIT is already hard at work developing it as we speak.
