The day after Herb Reed’s death, his manager, Fred Balboni Jr., was in a Boston courthouse trying to protect the rights of his friend and former client. Balboni, who’d managed the R&B legend for the past several years, is suing Florida-based booking agent Gary Cape for allegedly falsely listing Reed and the Platters as a client. “The guy had Herb’s image and bio on his website, and obviously was booking the Platters on the premise that you’d be getting Herb,” Balboni told us Wednesday. “He’s since changed the website.” (In an e-mail, Cape said he had not yet seen the suit.) This isn’t the first time Balboni has gone to court to prevent people from using Reed’s name to cash in. He currently has two suits pending in Nevada against groups he claims are Platters impostors. Reed, who was the last surviving member of the five original Platters who signed with Mercury Records in the 1950s, died Monday at 83. He was a longtime resident of Arlington. Balboni said he’s putting together a memorial service for Reed – tentatively scheduled for June 16 — and some of the singer’s famous friends may show up, including Tom Jones, Little Richard, and Danny & the Juniors. The Platters’ hits include “Only You,” “The Great Pretender,” and “Twilight Time.”
