Jonah Lehrer resigned from The New Yorker Monday after admitting he lied about quotes attributed to Bob Dylan that were included in Lehrer’s best-selling book, “Imagine: How Creativity Works.” Lehrer, who used to live in Boston and wrote several pieces for The Boston Globe’s Ideas section, had been asked about the quotes by the online magazine Tablet. “Three weeks ago, I received an e-mail from journalist Michael Moynihan asking about Bob Dylan quotes in my book ‘Imagine,’ ” Mr. Lehrer said in a statement. “The quotes in question either did not exist, were unintentional misquotations, or represented improper combinations of previously existing quotes. But I told Mr. Moynihan that they were from archival interview footage provided to me by Dylan’s representatives. This was a lie spoken in a moment of panic. When Mr. Moynihan followed up, I continued to lie, and say things I should not have said.” A few weeks ago, Lehrer caught flak for reusing in a June 12 New Yorker piece something he had written last fall for The Wall Street Journal. In announcing his resignation, Lehrer said he is sorry. “The lies are over now. I understand the gravity of my position. I want to apologize to everyone I have let down, especially my editors and readers.”
