Racing goes off-road in cyclo-cross

There is a light at the end of this tunnel. Well, the light is a beer, and a pretty good one. Yet, as my bike race is winding and winding and winding to its end, my vision is most definitely tunneling.

Sensing an oncoming heart attack, I wonder, Why am I doing this?

It's a mixed blessing that cyclocross has gotten to be much more popular.  Racing cross 10 years ago had much more of a small community feel. The courses were quirky, lots of eccentric folks, frankenstein bikes (assembled from spare parts), as a racer you'd never know what to expect.  Now it's a big sport with big money for top contenders. Courses are generally laid out to be ridden fast, interspersed by a limited menu of standard obstacles.  Modern cyclocross makes for a better spectator sport, but the sport has become more bland and standardized for it.
