From Globe archives: The holiday season in Boston

This week we look back at Boston’s holiday traditions. The city is transformed during this seasonwith visual treats of Santa walking the streets, excited children, and fanciful decorations.Among all of the shopping and hustle, warmheartedness permeates the city.

In this file photo, busy holiday shoppers are silhouetted in the late afternoon lightas they cross Washington Street outside the two big department stores, Filene’s and Jordan Marsh.

That does not appear to be 1906. I don't believe there were traffic lights of that type, and the style of dress, type/ # of vehicles. I think you're off by 20 years. Please let me know. I like to be right, need to know if I'm wrong.

Is the date (1906) correct?  From the style of the clothes, and the automobiles, it would seem the date should be much later.

I agree that this photo must be dated incorrectly. I would think from the clothes and automobiles it's in the 1920's or thirties.

The 1906 date of the photo is incorrect. Judging from the traffic on the street, the clothing style,

the street lights and traffic light, the photo is much later , perhaps the late 1920's. The famous

Filene's buildng was completed in 1912.

Glad others besides me see some anachronisms here!  The clothing, cars, and the traffic light are all wrong.  1926 seems more likely.

This is the second time this photo appeared with the date 1906. I contacted the editor but it is back again with an incorrect date. It is either the twenties or thirties.
