Sunday’s Child is Averic, 9

Hi! My name is Averic. I love going to the Boys & Girls Club.

Averic is 9, quiet and reserved in new situations but able to form relationships once he is comfortable. He likes playing outside, riding his bike, playing with action figures or video games — and going to the Boys & Girls Club.

Helpful to others, Averic also has good self-help skills. He is a good eater and in good health. At home, he responds to strict and clear limits and benefits from a behavior management chart. His conduct can be inconsistent in school, but his counselor states that, overall, Averic is polite and cooperative.

Averic would do best in a two-parent family, possibly with older children whom he could look up to as positive role models.

To learn more about Averic, call the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) at 617-54-ADOPT (617-542-3678) or visit www

How do I adopt a child from foster care?

To adopt, you must go through training, an interview, and a matching process that can take a year or two. To begin, call the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange for referrals to agencies in your area. A social worker will meet with you, then refer you for the Massachusetts Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (MAPP) training.

After completing the MAPP course, you will have meetings with a social worker who will conduct a home study to explore adoption possibilities and begin the process to match you with a waiting child. It’s important to balance patience with persistence in order to make a match that will build a lifelong family.
