My Instagram: Abigail Sterling

Abigail Sterling.

Abigail Sterling.

Most 26-year-olds might name Kate Bosworth or Beyonce as their style inspiration. But not Abigail Sterling (www.insta

fablifeofanatchdisaster
). The one-time aspiring actress turned executive assistant and blogger sweetly names her grandmother as the wind beneath her fashionable wings. “She’s so fabulous and such a beautiful person inside and out,” she says. I suspect Grandma is proud today because Sterling is our Instagram style pick of the week. Time to chat with her about how she rounds out her wardrobe with pieces from the family matriarch’s closet.

Q. As a college theater major, whose film career were you most hoping to emulate: Shirley MacLaine, Joan Plowright, or Dame Judi Dench? You’re also allowed to name a more age-appropriate actress if you prefer.

A. Definitely Judi Dench. I would love to be British, and a Dame for that matter. I did want to emulate Lindsay Lohan’s career in middle school. I’m pretty sure my parents are happy that my plans evolved between then and college.

Q. Given that your grandmother helped inspire your style, have you ever gone through a “Golden Girls” glam phase? Perhaps you could bring back daytime peach pajamas with shoulder pads and a well-placed brooch?

A. When I started getting into vintage and realizing how stylish my grandmother is, everything I liked had shoulder pads in it. I wore them for a while until people kept telling me I looked like a linebacker. I was a super scrawny 16-year-old. I decided to try and cut out the shoulder pads, but ended up ruining all my tops. In hindsight, the shoulder pads would have made a great bra stuffer though.

Q. Does your grandmother ever get angry when you “borrow” from her closet?

A. I love everything my grandmother is willing to pass off to me, from Ferragamos to
T-shirts, but I wouldn’t dare borrow something from her without her permission. Now my sister’s closest, that’s another story.

Q. What is it about vintage goods that strikes your fancy?

A. I love the thrill of the hunt, and I like that they are one-of-a-kind and unique. Except for that vintage Gucci bag I bought in college. It was neither one-of-a-kind nor real for that matter.

Q. Your apartment is burning! What do you save?

A. My roommates! I love them. They are the best. However, should they happen to be out of town or at work when my apartment starts to burn: my jewelry.

Q. Please answer the following question from the Dionne Warwick hit song “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”: What do you get when you fall in love?

A. Someone who thinks you’re pretty all the time (even when you know you’re an ugly crier) and someone who always lets you have the last few fries on his plate when you order a salad to be healthy.
