Chef Jim Casey focuses on seafood at Plymouth restaurant the Blue-Eyed Crab, but weekend pig pickin’ events there have always been very popular. So when the West Roxbury resident began thinking about a new project closer to home, barbecue was on his mind. The result is the Red-Eyed Pig, offering takeout and very limited seating.
With the help of a Cookshack smoker, the tiny storefront turns out large amounts of barbecue for a neighborhood hungry for something different. “There’s plenty of pizza and Chinese food already,’’ Casey points out.
One look at the menu says this isn’t your average BBQ joint. Appetizers include green chili and pork belly doughnuts with garlic aioli, fried half-sour pickles with sweet onion remoulade, and hush puppies with orange maple-bacon butter. There’s a Caesar salad with white anchovies. But brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and fried chicken with red-eyed gravy are all here, too. So is a burger with barbecue sauce, pimento cheese, bacon, onions, and tomato jam. (Those who can’t make up their mind might order The Piggy: a burger topped with pork belly, beef brisket, and pulled pork.) Sides include baked beans, collards, and macaroni and cheese. Desserts such as Mississippi mud pie and banana pudding are served in Mason jars.
