Homemade vs. store-bought

Two years in the making, “The Homemade Pantry: 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying & Start Making,” is the vision of Alana Chernila, a food blogger and busy parent based in Western Massachusetts. It’s an ode to the joy of making everyday foods at home, from ketchup and butter to granola bars and chicken nuggets. Writer James Reed picks three favorite dishes and makes them from the book.

90 minutes of work for a breakfast confection? did i read this right?

I really don't get comments like this. If you're not interested in cooking why are you reading (and commenting on) an article about cooking? I made home-made bagels this weekend. They took a while (mostly down-time), but I had fun doing it, and they were honestly better than most bagels I've ever bought.

Nothing has irritated me more than this article... The Pop Tarts sounded great and I think they would be cool to make (like any pastry is), but my favorite part about this article are these two gems... "She admits the kid-friendly cookbook is not necessarily about time and cost savings..." and... "But at the same time, work improves the quality of what we eat. And I think we need that. The food tastes better, and it makes our lives better, too." I really cannot believe that that second line actually came out of a human beings mouth. Make our lives better?!? Can she honestly believe that? I have never heard a more pretentious line in my life. You know what makes my life better? A sack of MacDonalds cheeseburgers guiltily fired down on a Sunday afternoon... Hey honey, no sh*t homemade McNuggets taste better than MacDonalds fakes one, but you are aware that there are people who aren't wealthy in this country, no? And you are also aware that people like McNuggets because they are FAST FOOD!!! Which means, they get it FAST! My wife and I enjoy nothing more than cooking at home, but by the time you buy ingredients and some wine, the cost isn't that much cheaper than going out. I get it. It tastes better. But does the ketchup really taste better and for 120 minutes of your time?!? I really do hate some people and it is completely our generations fault that we not only do stuff like this, but buy into it... Maybe Dads back in the day were more awesome than we thought eating sardine sandwiches on white with a glass of whole milk and a Hostess Cupcake... I can't believe how fired up I am by this, but it embarrassing that our generation is doing this to "say we did it." We are now at a point where we've all had a Guiness in Ireland, we all know who The Shins are, we've all run a marathon, we all know what Pretty Things is, we've all driven across country, we've all backpacked Europe, we all have wine aerators (sp?), we've all got a Mac, we all order free trade coffee from Diesel, we all own a pair of Wayfarers and a Kate Spade bag, and we've all seen a subtitled Dutch horror film. So now all that's left to one up each other and discuss on the Bookface is that we make our own f**kin ketchup... We thirtysomethings are pathetic...
