New Allston ice cream shop FoMu (pronounce it “faux moo,” as in fake cow) offers a vegan version of the cold treat. Flavors range from the standard Neapolitan three to more exotic Thai peanut and avocado. Varieties for the cups or cones ($3.75 to $5.60) rotate periodically, says co-owner Deena Tang, and soft serve will be introduced soon. All flavors are also sold in pints ($6.95) or as frappes ($5.50). The dairy-free ice cream base is made from coconut milk. “It’s so creamy, and it just lends itself to an ice cream medium,” says Tang, who with husband Hin runs an ice cream commissary in Watertown. The dessert is made in small batches, sweetened with raw sugar or agave. The Allston spot doubles as a cafe, serving hot and iced coffee from Acton’s George Howell Coffee Co. and tea from Somerville’s MEM Tea Imports. Vegan desserts from Veggie Galaxy in Cambridge complement the beverages. Bits of the sweets are mixed into some ice cream flavors.
