Smart-looking ladle makes mark

Epicurean has come up with a ladle that does the job and then some. The smart-looking 13-inch ladle (about $10) has a smooth, natural wood composite (dishwasher safe) handle and black nylon head that resists high heat and can be used in nonstick pans. Another nice feature is the strainer holes in the bowl, handy for draining off liquid. And there are portion markers ( cup, ¼ cup, and ½ cup) on the head, which will keep risotto cooks honest when they are tempted to hurry things along by adding extra broth to the bubbling rice.
