When the Brigham’s on Trapelo Road closed in January after almost 80 years, online reviewers mourned the passing of a childhood favorite. Say hello to the new kid on the block. Freshly landscaped and painted in Day-Glo colors, Moozy’s Ice Cream and Yogurt Emporium opened on the same spot in June, and it’s already part of the neighborhood. “Sometimes older people will come in and say how much they miss the Brigham’s,” says manager Ellen Brandt. “But then in the same breath they’ll say what a welcome change this is.”
A growing lunch and dinner trade comes for build-your-own grilled cheese sandwiches, house-made waffle cones and bowls (plain or chocolate-dipped), and real chocolate jimmies. Brandt uses local products when she can: ice cream from Bliss Dairy in Attleboro, hot peanut-butter sauce from Superior Nut in Cambridge, berries for the trendy tart yogurt from local farms. She chalks up Moozy’s success so far to its “screaming” cleanliness, full accommodation for allergies, and fun, upbeat atmosphere. The ice cream doesn’t hurt, either.
“My husband is crazy about the red velvet,” says Gabriela Chavuschian of Watertown, having a pre-lunch treat with daughter, Margrit, 2½, and Madeline Cinar, 3. “He gets a gallon to keep in the house, but it doesn’t last long.” Moozy’s, 2 Trapelo Road, Belmont, 617-484-4445, www.moozysicecream.com.
