Many families see the beginning of the school year as a moment of reinvention.

Nothing drastic here, except perhaps kids tending to chores more diligently, parents coming home earlier, the group sitting down for weeknight suppers on a regular basis. In order for family supper to run smoothly, you only need a few dependable recipes (on pages 8-11 we offer four savory and two sweet). Enlist everyone’s help in the prep and don’t get discouraged when the troops rebel.

Keep offering different dishes until you get a standing ovation. OK, that may never come. But you can often tell by what’s left on the plates what worked and what didn’t. Not that you’re anywhere near the sink. Leave that to the others.
