Ginseng concession now at H Mart in Burlington

As you enter the Asian mega grocery H Mart, take a sharp left and you’ll see an aisle of jewelry, then furniture and makeup, and finally the KGC Ginseng Co. This bright space with a modern vibe sells the ancient root red ginseng, used widely in Asian herbal medicine for its purported enhancement of well being. Cheong-Kwan-Jang brand powdered tea is made from Korean-grown 6-year-old red ginseng, which is typically dried, ground into a powder, and mixed with boiling water as a beverage. Owner Jaeho Jung says, “It is 100 percent natural product with no caffeine,” and maintains that ginseng helps with fatigue, stamina, and blood circulation. His clientele is

mostly Asian, but lately he’s been noticing more non-Asians at the shop. There are about 30 KGC Ginseng Co. concessions in the country; this is the only one in Massachusetts. Boxes come with 50 foil-wrapped packets in three strengths ($20 for 15 percent, $35 for 25 percent, $55 for 42 percent red ginseng), all sweetened with a varying degree of sugar. The distinct earthy, herby flavor has a slightly bitter taste, hence the sweetener. “The higher percentage of ginseng,” says Jung, “the greater the health benefit.” KGC Ginseng Co., H Mart, 30 Old Concord Road, Burlington, 781-238-0303.
