Blizzards of activity heated Twitter kitchens

Readers, you amaze me. When I asked on Twitter over the weekend what you cooked in the storm, the array of dishes sounded tempting, warming, nourishing — and only a little fattening. Alas, all that shoveling does burn calories and work up a fierce hunger.

In my kitchen, there was Turkish red lentil soup, chicken soup, roast chicken on a bed of root vegetables, and oven fries. Ingredients for lemon cake and hummus are still sitting on the counter. A neighbor who was expecting guests found herself with a pot of Julia Child’s boeuf bourguignon and steamed potatoes, so invited us and other neighbors. I brought Maine shrimp for a first course, and some chocolate brownie cookies from my freezer. Another guest brought chocolate chip cookies.

Of course, I combined recipies from America's Test Kitchen and The Best Slow Cooker Recipies Cookbook to make a terrific curried split pea & ham soup using skillet-fried bacon & a ham steak for the meat protein and chicken stock for deglazing the fond from the frying.  With our own homegrown carrots and leeks. it was quite rich and satisfying!
