If you like cannoli you’ll love cannoli chips

If you like cannoli — and who doesn’t? — you’ll love cannoli chips. Made from the same pastry as cannoli shells, the chips are cut into triangles and dusted with powdered sugar or cinnamon and sugar ($1.99 for about a dozen). Dip them into plain or flavored ricotta and it’s just like eating perfect crispy, creamy cannoli, except they never get soggy the way pre-filled cannoli sometimes do. Or break with tradition and serve the chips with softened ice cream or sorbet. Sisters Valerie Bono and Maria Molloy of the Golden Cannoli Shells Co. of Somerville came up with the idea a year ago. They had been breaking cannoli shells in half to give out as samples at food shows when they realized that cutting them into triangles, cookie-cutter style, would be simpler. Now, says Bono, the chips are “selling by the truckloads” to supermarkets, restaurants, and bakeries in Boston and around the country. The sisters are second-generation owners of the company, one of the largest suppliers of cannoli shells — and now chips — in the business.  Available at all in-store bakeries at Roche Bros., Market Basket, and Shaw’s locations and at D’Amici’s Bakery locations, 500 Eastern Ave., Lynn, 781-599-6871; 462 Main St., Melrose, 781-665-3030; and 93 New Salem St., Wakefield, 781-246-8855.
