Local, small batch crackers are dehydrated, not baked

Handout

Crispy, dense, and studded with sunflower and flax seeds, Honu’s Hearth crackers (3.5 ounces for $8.99), are made mostly from locally sourced vegetables minimally heated in small batches and then dehydrated, rather than baked. Enhanced with rock salt and spices, the healthy crisps come in ginger-carrot, tomato-basil, and sage-pickle flavors, and are cut into irregular rectangles with a pizza cutter. Victoria Dolben started her Rockport company last summer, but began making crackers when she was living in Hawaii and selling them at a farmers’ market (“honu” is the Hawaiian word for turtle). A nutritious on-the-go snack, the crackers can hold their own with sharp cheeses and zesty spreads. Available at Cambridge Naturals, 23 White St., Cambridge, 617-492-4452; Debra’s Natural Gourmet, 98 Commonwealth Ave., Concord, 978-371-7573; Common Crow Natural Market, 6 Elm St., Gloucester, 978-283-1665; Lula’s Pantry, 5 Dock Square, Rockport, 978-546-0010; or go to www.honushearth.com.
