|Butter (for the dish)|
|4||yellow potatoes, peeled and cut into ⅛-inch-thick slices|
|½||onion, thinly sliced|
|1½||cups heavy cream|
|Black pepper, to taste|
|½||cup grated Gruyere cheese|
1. Set the oven at 400 degrees. Butter a 9-inch baking dish. Have on hand a rimmed baking sheet.
2. In a large, wide saucepan over medium heat, combine the potatoes, onion, cream, milk, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.
3. Spoon the mixture into the baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese, and set on a baking sheet. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until bubbly and golden.
