Author and “Fed Up” coproducer Laurie David has published a second cookbook with recipe developer Kirstin Uhrenholdt: “The Family Cooks: 100+ Recipes to Get Your Family Craving Food That’s Simple, Tasty and Incredibly Good for You” (Rodale Books, $27.99). David, mother of two daughters, 17 and 19, came to healthy eating after decades of environmental activism. She lives in Los Angeles and maintains Wise Owl Farm in Chilmark, on Martha’s Vineyard, with her husband. Her family cookbook doesn’t aim to please by deception (say, zucchini in the chocolate cake) or pandering (M & M’s arranged in smiley faces). What we have here is real food: vegetable frittata, peppermint green pea soup, salmon coconut curry. Ingredient lists are short but wholesome, cooking times are fast, and flavors are interesting enough to keep the grown-ups coming back for more. Recipes come with helpful tips for cooking with kids plus simple variations. Designwise, the hardcover has an airy, breezy layout. “The Family Cooks” available at Trident Booksellers and Cafe, 338 Newbury St., Boston, 617-267-8688, Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St., Brookline, 617-566-6660, and at online booksellers.
