A new South End restaurant serves a 5-foot-long, $900 lobster roll

Only in Boston: It is now possible to order a lobster roll that’s taller than some adults.

The South End’s Lobstah on a Roll (537 Columbus Ave. at Claremont Park) serves a 5-foot-long roll — dubbed the Monstah — made with meat from 80 lobsters, sourced from Maine, designed to feed about 60 seafood lovers. For smaller appetites, they also serve 2- and 3-foot rolls, plus a 6-inch version for real wimps. The shop opened on Nov. 4.

“The [5-foot rolls] are typically used for catered events. Usually you buy them for a party or some type of function at work,” says co-owner David Spinney, who has never attempted to eat a whole one himself.

The 5-foot roll costs roughly $850 to $900, though market price varies. No matter what your size preference, customers can opt for a hot or cold version with butter, mayonnaise, and celery. And while lobster rolls are the signature item, the restaurant also sells soups and chowders, salads, and sandwiches in everyday portions.

The shop will expand to Arlington in early December, says Spinney, who runs the restaurant with Joe Marcus. The South End version is geared toward takeout, while the Arlington version will have seating (ideal for lingering over those long lobster rolls) and a steak menu.

The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner.
