Memorial Day is fast approaching, and if you haven’t started thinking about home entertaining for the summer yet, well, sorry to tell you, but you better get a move on. First, though, to decide: wine or cocktails? Wine, of course, is easier, but cocktails will keep your friends talking long after you’ve cleaned up the grill. La Vie en Rose, is as fitting a cocktail for session sipping in the afternoon sunshine. The drink, a creation on the menu at W XYZ Bar at Aloft Boston Seaport, employs rosemary syrup as the “secret weapon,” as bartender Sebastiao da Silva puts it. (So much for “secret.”) Pavan, a liqueur made from muscat grapes and orange blossoms, gives it a dessert wine-like zip, but St. Germain, a more ubiquitous liqueur, works just as well. And now that that’s settled, start thinking about what you’re going to serve for appetizers. LIZA WEISSTUCH

Makes 1 drink

1½ ounces Beefeater Gin (or any London dry gin)

½ ounce Pavan (or St.-Germain)

½ ounce lemon juice

½ ounce rosemary simple syrup (To make syrup: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine one 1 cup of water, 1 cup sugar, and handful of rosemary sprigs. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves, and let cool.)

1. Pour ingredients into a shaker and dry-shake (without ice) vigorously for 15 seconds.

2. Pour into a tumbler over crushed ice.

3. Garnish with sprig of rosemary.
