New drug approved for most common type of skin cancer

The US Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug today for the most common type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma. Erivedge (vismodegib) is the first drug available to treat basal cell cancer that has spread locally or metastasized to distant parts of the body. It can also be used in patients with early stage cancer who can’t be treated with surgery or radiation.
