Mass. hospitals urged to apologize, settle

For hospitals, avoiding lawsuits may mean learning to say ‘I’m sorry’

Despite being the victim of an egregious and undeniable medical error that led her to undergo unnecessary surgery, Mary White decided not to sue the hospital or the doctors involved in her care. She reached her decision largely because Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the pathologist, and their malpractice insurer swiftly apologized, disclosed details of the error, implemented improvements, and offered a financial settlement for her pain and suffering so she would not have to resort to a lawsuit.
