The mayors of New York and Cambridge, the American Medical Association, and the Harvard School of Public Health have begun an assault on sugary drinks, particularly large servings of soda. Such giant servings – the “Big Gulp” is a king-size of the 7-Eleven chain, but there are many others of its ilk – are both a direct factor in the obesity epidemic, researchers say, and a symbol of the outsized portions most Americans now eat.
