A decade after an ambitious experiment, dubbed Shape Up Somerville, was launched to lower obesity rates in elementary school children by boosting physical activity and encouraging more healthy eating, the campaign has been woven into the fabric of the city’s everday life. But measuring whether the trail-blazing initiative has lowered the city’s obesity rates is a much trickier proposition, not just in Somerville, but in many communities nationwide that are receiving federal grants to try to replicate Somerville’s early success.
