Meningitis outbreak toll rises to 28 deaths, 363 illnesses

The number of people sickened in a nationwide meningitis outbreak increased to 363, and three more deaths were reported, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

Twenty-eight people have now been killed in the outbreak, which has been linked to steroid shots for back pain from the New England Compounding Center, a specialty pharmacy in Framingham. The medication has been recalled, and the pharmacy has closed.
