In a striking settlement of a high-profile case, a Harvard doctor who said she endured years of sexist treatment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will collect $7 million — and will have the hospital’s pain clinic named in her honor.
Employment lawyers said the hospital’s settlement with Dr. Carol Warfield, its former chief of anesthesia, appears to be one of the largest for a gender discrimination case in Massachusetts. Ilene Sunshine, a lawyer who represents defendants in bias suits, said it seems “enormous,’’ though she pointed out that it is hard to compare because settlements usually remain confidential.

Wow 7 mil. put that in next year's double digit increase.
Imagine, her entire career she faced this discrimination and barrier to doing her job without distraction. Yet she still succeeded so well. More power to her! The world will surely have to change when this generation of dinosaurs dies off. Honestly, he likes to hire tall western white men!! Well, who doesn't? They're top of the racial totem pole.

Reading between the lines, this is a cast of characters that deserves each other's throats. We know about Levy: selfish, self-seeking, self-important, hypocritical, and incompetent. Fisher sounds like the typical one-dimensional, arrogant, medical man. And Warfield strikes me as a humorless whiner and injustice collector. In the words of Beethoven: “Who can live among such spoiled children?"
In my many experiences with BEDMC, I've had occaision to meet Levy, Fisher, and Warfield. Your assesments of them are fair accurate. However, I was glad to see Warfield get this settlement. It will make the Pale Male Bromance Fest that is currently happening at our Elite Medical Schools and Centers stop and think before they hassle a talented Physician merely because she is female. I have had the privilege of knowing a few female Docs, and I've found them extremely bright, compassionate, and approachable. Male Docs...not so much. So. In the name of all the future female physicuians this suit will help, good for you, Doctor Warfield.
Gender Bias - what a load of crap!!! Clearly, Dr. Warfield didn't get along with Dr. Fisher, and lost the political battle at BDMC. Then, like all these tough feminists, she turns around and cries Gender Discrimination, gets herself some crybaby female attorneys who scam the system with frivolous gender bias suits, and wins a politically correct verdict which is way out of proportion to any damages Dr. Warfield could have possibly suffered. This is emblematic of the cancer that is eating-away at our culture and society as a whole.
Anybody got an extra box of Kleenex for ObamaFan?
What a whining coward, wimpering into his keyboard "waaaa, my people are sooo picked on". Anybody want to place odds on whether he has a goatee and a spare tire?
Please stay exactly as you are ObamaFan - you make us 'real' white men look so good in comparison!!
Ladies, better hurry up, I hear ObamaFan is Single! What a shock.
Wow. Can't wait till I can sue.
I'm a WASP...and I get ignored all the time. SOon I'll be able to to say "I was passed over and preference was given to a former ILLEGAL"!
You need to have a job first.

Well, I have read the article three times and can't find a $7,000,000 reason for the settlement. So it must be someone else's money, I guess. Coming out of the hospital and insurance companies, and thus it will just become part of the ongoing mystery of rising medical costs.
You could characterize this as three extremely well-paid doctors with prestigious careers settle a years-old in-house fight -- at the public's expense.
Or a whiny broad gets back at a couple of mean medico studs -- at the public's expense.
Either way, the ending is the same.
Levy is a sleazeball. Too bad, he is not paying this award. The responsibility was to get Fisher to stop his behavior. The old boy network of wink, wink let's call Dr. Warfield a couple of names worked to demote her but in the end, she stayed with the suit and won. Good for Dr. Warfield. The institution did not make the work place an equal opportunity employer. So the consequences are a large pay day. When the big wigs have to pay up, the message is sent. Cut the crap, old boys. Dr. Warfield won.
Who actually pays? An insurance company and later all of us through pass-through charges. That's it. I know very little about these actual people and who did what to whom -- mostly what is contained in this article, which, as I said, is not particularly telling -- a series of allegations about what seems a mixture of mutual dislike among the principals in a workplace dispute. Nothing that smacks of $7m to me, at least. Some lawyers and a doctor score lots of $$$ and cheers go up from the usual suspects out for revenge. Meanwhile healthcare costs continue to escalate with all concerned acting perplexed about why. Frivolous lawsuits are by no means the only cause of medical costs rising, but I seriously doubt Dr. Warfield is even close to underpaid. So the system found a way for all of us to pay for a workplace dispute. Hooray?
From a male: Their behavior was abhorrent (being so repugnant as to stir up positive antagonism), and she deserves the award. YankeeGreenUSA, please learn how to write English, you owe it to yourself.
