The following are some recent examples of overhead or “facility’’ fees charged by hospitals for routine doctors’ appointments. The fees listed represent the portion paid by patients and do not include costs covered by insurer.

Routine 20-minute exam

Where: Medical building adjacent to Tufts Medical Center, Boston.

Tufts facility fee: About $500.
