Patrick Muldoon has been named chief executive of the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, the first permanent appointment to that post since the retirement of Dr. Walter Ettinger in January 2012.

Muldoon, who will start in his new role Aug. 26, is president of Central New England HealthAlliance Hospital, a much smaller member of the UMass Memorial Health Care system with campuses in Leominster and Fitchburg.

Muldoon has an undergraduate degree in health services administration from Providence College and a master’s in business administration from Loyola University in Chicago. He has led hospitals in Michigan and Rhode Island, including the South County Hospital Healthcare System. He was chief executive of the Northern Berkshire Health System, serving northwest Massachusetts and southwest Vermont.

He has spent nine years at HealthAlliance and is currently serving as chairman of the trade group representing most hospitals in the state. Dr. Eric Dickson, chief executive of UMass Memorial Health Care, the medical center’s parent organization, called Muldoon “an ideal leader.”

“Patrick’s extensive leadership reach within our health care system and now as the chairman of Massachusetts Hospital Association will serve the medical center, its patients, physicians, and staff exceptionally well,” Dickson said in a press release.
